Optimizing SRS: Memory Anchors for Foreign Vocabulary

The human brain is optimized to forget. To prevent overload, our neural pathways prune information that isn't repeatedly recalled. However, we can hack this mechanism using the Spacing Effect.

The Forgetting Curve

First charted by Hermann Ebbinghaus, the forgetting curve shows that memory retention drops exponentially after learning new material. But if you review the material right before you forget it, the memory trace becomes significantly stronger, and the forgetting curve flattens.

Enter Spaced Repetition (SRS)

By spacing out review sessions at increasing intervals (1 day, 3 days, 8 days, 15 days), you maximize neural retrieval strength. This moves words from short-term working memory into long-term crystalline storage.
